How to maintain your dog's coat between appointments
Ten minutes a week keeps grooms shorter, cheaper and more comfortable. A simple routine for busy owners.
By Maya Ellison, groomer at Maya’s Pet Grooming

The coat looks perfect the day it leaves the studio. What happens over the next six weeks decides how the next groom goes.
The weekly routine
- Brush in sections, from the skin outward, 2–3 times a week.
- Comb through behind the ears, legs and tail to catch small tangles early.
- Wipe paws and check between the pads after muddy walks.
- Check the ears weekly. A little wax is normal, but a strong smell isn't.
- Trim or file nails if you can hear them clicking.
Bathing at home
Use a dog shampoo, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely, especially thick or curly coats. Damp hair trapped against the skin is where mats and hot spots start. Most dogs don't need a bath more than every few weeks.
Book ahead
After each groom, Maya’s Pet Grooming suggests the right next date and gives you a link that already has your dog's details filled in. Booking before the coat gets away from you keeps appointments shorter.
